About me pages always make my mind go blank, which is ironic because there's really so much to say. I guess what stumps me is where do I start? Here are the basics: They named me Laura. They, meaning my parents, who were never married but mingled in 1988 in the country of Brazil, where little me was born. I grew up in New York City among a melting pot of cultures, smells, and hustle. I've learned to be a go-getter, thinker, intuitive, lover of life, peace maker, and coffee enthusiast - among other things. I like to write. I've been keeping a journal since my early teenage years. I created Reflect Out Loud to simply share whatever is on my mind in whatever style that comes up for me. I try to let whatever I put out here be free flowing. I simply want to share my thoughts out in the open. But to simplify this about me: I am a human, having a human experience. I have a story, just like you have a story. And some of that story you'll see here. Um... I guess that's pretty much all I have for now. Big love, Laura

Stop Wishing – DO IT.

Stop Wishing – DO IT.
Stop wishing for the things you want and just start DOING the things you want.
Stop wishing you could travel more – go sell some used crap you no longer need and book a cheap ticket to the closest place you’ve never been to. Even if it’s just for one or two days. DO IT – TRAVEL. Stop wishing.

Stop wishing you had a better body and START working out. Right now. Stop reading this and do some jumping jacks, push ups, crunches and jog in place. Stop wishing. DO IT – WORK OUT.

Stop wishing you could eat better. PHYSICALLY STOP PUTTING CRAP IN YOUR MOUTH. Put 1 sugar in your coffee instead of 500. Eat carrots and celery for snacks instead of a snicker bar. Stop wishing. DO IT – EAT HEALTHY.

Stop wishing you could go back to school. Use your time to go online and search for schools, financial aid, scholarships, payment plans, loans, programs, alternative methods to the education you want. Stop wishing. DO IT – GO TO SCHOOL.

Stop wishing you had the courage to leave your unhealthy relationships behind. Speak your mind and walk away without turning back. Stop wishing. DO IT – EMBRACE COURAGE.

What are you wishing for? Whatever it is – Stop wishing. DO IT!

Are you doing it yet?

Believe

Believe in yourself so fiercely that the thunder of the roaring sea is silenced by your confidence.

Believe in yourself with such bold, unwavering faith that earthquakes cannot shake you.

Believe in yourself with enough authority to ride fear like a skateboard through your favorite park.

Focus your intent on the bullseye.
Get up! Stand up! Take charge!
For every time you think you can’t, tell yourself you CAN one hundred times over.
Always give fear a hard time.
When you coward in your seat withered in spirit – rise above shaky knees and speak your truth in trumpet volume.
Look deep into your own eyes and violently roar like the mighty beast that you are.
Drum your vein draped fists against your iron chest to the beat of victory.
Let it be known that YOU BELIEVE.
Let it be known that you ferociously bring forth into existence all your dreams.

You are unstoppable when you believe.

Consistent Actions

A lot of times we don’t achieve the results we desire because we behave in opposition to the results we want to manifest. We say things like “I want a new job,” but don’t fix up our resume and actually apply to new jobs. We say, “I want to lose weight,” then continue to eat unhealthy meals and do little to no exercise. It is no surprise that we keep hitting the same brick wall and remain stuck in the same old story. It is so much easier to just keep doing what we have always been doing because our brains have developed strong neural connections for our current behaviors. Therefore, change, at first, won’t come easy. The moment we start creating new habits, our bodies will naturally want to gravitate back into the old, familiar behaviors. So it is crucial that we be consistent.

Suppose you want to start eating vegetables every day but your body is used to eating bread every day, your bread cravings will naturally surface. Your body will say to you, “OoOh, look at that yummy piece of bread. Wouldn’t it just be amazing to have it with some delicious butter?” Your body will remind you of the salty-sweet, rich smell of bread. It will recall to you how comforting it feels to just bite into that soft piece of deliciousness and how satisfying it makes your belly feel.  If at that moment, right when your old patterns start to creep in, you do not make the conscious decision to say, “BREAD – ALTHOUGH YOU ARE DELICIOUS,  I AM GOING TO EAT SOME BROCCOLI AND CARROTS INSTEAD,” then you will fall back into your old pattern. You have to say “NO” to whatever is against the result you want to achieve. I’ve used bread as an example, (I love me some bread, mmmm) but it’s the same equation with anything else you want to change in your life. The old pattern will creep in and you must interrupt it with the new pattern you want to make habit of.

Real change will happen once you start to take consistent action towards your desired goal. Caveat – you may not always want to take the necessary action to get what you want. You may not always want to get up early before work to go exercise. You may not always want to spend hours in front of your computer to search for new jobs. You may not always want to eat broccoli instead of a Wendy’s burger (mmmmm). It’s not about wanting to. You have to listen to the inner sergeant within you that fiercely commands you, “GET THE HECK UP AND JUST FREAKING DO IT ANYWAY!” Great results require your committed effort on days that you feel like it and on days that you don’t. Even when you don’t really feel like taking action, push yourself. You have to be consistent if you want to see real results. You will be so glad you did!

Storms

Processed with Rookie Cam
You just have to wait for the storms to pass. Look — look yonder – the light still shines behind those blackened skies.

Intuition

Every time I fail to acknowledge the hunch feeling that arises when my intuition speaks to me, I make choices that are not in alignment with my desired outcome.

Your intuition will not stir you wrong, so trust it when it speaks. It doesn’t matter what other people are saying contrary to your intuition – if you feel it – it’s true for you.

Listening to your intuition will help you when making small or big decisions. Something as small as “should I buy this outfit or not” can be clearly answered if only you allow yourself to listen to your hunch. Your internal guiding system will always stir you in the direction of your highest results because it wants to ensure your survival and simply because it serves you for your best. If you disregard the subtle signals that your body gives you to instruct you on your best path, you will make decisions that are contrary to the results you want. Listen to yourself and trust yourself. Your intuition is here to assist you and it will not sabotage you.

Live

Sometimes I spend so much time trying to figure out my life that I don’t actually LIVE my life.

LIVE your life!
Just listen to music and flow off into the moment. Flow into the present and just let it consume you in its all-encompassing, loving arms.

In that space – in the space of the now – there’s just no room for worry. There’s no room for analyzing. There’s no room for thinking about shoulds. No room for regrets. No room for intrusive thoughts. There’s just this feeling – this feeling of tranquility. This feeling of peace. This feeling that things are okay and that they’re gonna be okay. This feeling of enoughness.

I just breath in deep.
And it feels so fresh.
So filling.
So satisfying.
It is so delightful to just flow in this space.

YOU CAN DO IT

There is no point in crying or being sad about not having enough knowledge in a subject or about not being skilled enough in a particular field. I mean, if you want to go be sad about it for two seconds – fine, mope if need be. But don’t stay stuck feeling sorry for yourself for too long because it just doesn’t serve you in any good way. If you realize there is something you aren’t good at, say math, for instance – feeling ashamed or bad for yourself isn’t going to help you improve your math skills. Instead, buy a book on basic math principles. Go on YouTube and type in “math for beginners.” Reach out to friends who can help. Reach out to tutors and teachers. Do something that will actually help you improve your skills rather than sit there and feel like a moron. You’re not a moron. You have the capability to learn anything you put your mind to. Be patient with yourself as you learn a new skill. You didn’t learn to walk and talk in a day, so don’t expect to be an expert at any one thing in a day. Take your time to learn at your own pace and in your own way. Don’t worry about what other people are doing and how much more or less they know compared to you. Focus on you. Focus on the skill you want to improve without comparing yourself to anyone else.
Know that…
You can learn.
You can improve yourself.
You can accomplish your goals.
You are intelligent.
You are capable.

So less moping and complaning and more searching and learning ;).

Patience

Every time the universe gently whispers the word “patience” to me, like a frantic child I hold my fingers tightly to my ears and violently yell, “NO! I want it NOW!”

ME:

I ask questions like, “When? When will I finally be where I wanna be? Have what I wanna have? Do what I wanna do?”
“Nonsense!” Says the universe in a playful, loving manner.
“Whoever told you that life is comprised of one single instant where you finally reach some end? That’s not life. There will always be something to get, do and be, since at every moment at the same time you are becoming you are undoing. The moment you are born you are dying; evermore unraveling. You are a process of being, becoming, breaking down, reconstructing, transforming. Relax. Be here now. Enjoy here as you go from instant to instant. Carry the enoughness from the present moment into the next moment and you will unravel gracefully without feeling like NOW isn’t enough as it is. Even if you get everything you want in one moment, the next moment there will be something new to experience. You make your bed and marvel at the neatness. Soon, you undo it to sleep, and repeat the next day. You wipe an army of dust from your work desk. Soon, the dust is right back and you must wipe it again. There’s no end to the process. There is no permanent state of perfection, except in stillness, because life equals movement, and movement equals chaos if not for intelligence. Chaos relies on intelligence to organize and maintain it. You are part of that intelligence. If things become too hectic, your consciousness can flow in and out of stillness as you please. This, in part, is why you sleep. Take it easy on yourself. Breath! Aaaahhhhh – you smell that? That’s life, baby! Enjoy it. Be it. Stop freaking out and going all cray cray trying to be more, have more, do more all at once. Do what you can for right now. Be what you are for right now. Have what you have for right now. Together, we’ll deal with what’s next as it comes. Everything will work out – I promise. Trust, act as necessary, and have PATIENCE!”

Be The Driver of Your Mind

The mind is like a vehicle that you use to navigate through life. You command left, left it goes. Right, right it goes. There are times, however, where your mind is the one navigating you rather than the other way around. You become lost in the stories in your head. You remember the past, rehearse for the future and on, and on the rambling continues to the point of overwhelm. Some of us are so lost in our minds and so controlled by its power that we can’t even fall asleep. The mind is riding us.

The mind is a powerful tool with tremendous potential. Use your mind for your service and wellbeing. Don’t let your mind take you away from the present moment as it replays old memories, blames you, guilts you, judges you, abuses you.  Don’t let your mind tell you negative, limiting stories that say you are not enough, not capable, and that you will not achieve your goals. When you catch yourself falling victim to the mind, interrupt it saying, “Hey, I am the boss here, not these limiting thoughts. I choose to love and believe in myself at all times. I am enough. I am present.” Command your mind! You are the driver and the mind is the vehicle – not the other way around. Drive your mind through roads that are conducive to your highest potential. If you see the mind getting out of control, like a car that begins to veer from its lane, guide it back to the present and loving path. Be the driver of your mind!
